PCLinuxOS launching hardware certification program
"The PCLinuxOS Hardware Database (HWDB) collects user-submitted reports on the compatibility of various hardware with the PCLinuxOS distribution. Now its founder has announced a plan to begin a hardware certification program for personal computer manufacturers.
The certification team plans to test computer models with the latest version of the distribution and, if it proves compatible, allow the manufacturer to add a "Certified -- Works with PCLinuxOS" label to the computer's packaging. Initially, the team plans to perform certification testing without vendor participation and report results unsolicited to manufacturers."
"Summers believes that Silver certified manufacturers are valuable resources for the expansion of desktop Linux awareness. After testing their products, he plans to contact these manufacturers to notify them of their certification. He hopes that the element of surprise will help them to realize the potential viability of the Linux market. In his words, "They seem to not care. We need to show we care and we're an asset. This is a way of showing, whether you like it or not, your hardware works. You can continue to ignore us or you can take advantage of your already working hardware and next time purposely say, 'We used this chip set because we know it's compatible for our Linux users.'"" -- Read more.
Sounds like a good thing, especially if they will certify only hardware which works with free drivers, but that's required if they expect "out of the box" support.
We have been talking about a hardware database and certification ideas on Libervis.com before. It's good to see they're being realized.

needs to be more generic
by a thing | Thu, 2007-04-26 14:58It shouldn't be specific to PCLOS. If it is, not only is it only focusing on one distro, but a distro that is okay with nonfree drivers.
I agree, but just as
by memenode | Thu, 2007-04-26 15:58I agree, but just as gNewSense builds on Ubuntu, some other project could easily build on the work PCLinuxOS guys would be doing here. At least that's why I think it's a good thing overall.
I Wish, reality won't let us.
by jmiahman | Thu, 2007-05-31 15:55I wish it could be more generic but that would mean multiple distributions working together to achieve a core kernel with certain modules. Kinda a LSB for the kernel. A Lot of distributions PCLinuxOS included modify the vanilla kernel to support more hardware. It's really up to the distributions. The reason PCLinuxOS was chosen was because out of all the communities I have worked with they have been more willing to take the good stuff from other distributions and add it to theirs giving credit were it's due. They didn't have a our way is better attitude and the developers are a pleasure to work with. I have one complaint about this article we are just not focusing on OEM machines we are focusing on all computer hardware in general. Most likely for first thing that will get certified will be a network card or video card. Not a whole machine.

by memenode | Fri, 2007-06-01 12:46I've no problem with choosing PCLinuxOS considering that the work done there will likely end up contributing others too. Once you certify a certain piece of hardware with PCLinuxOS, if it was certified based on free drivers support, everyone else would basically know that it works with GNU/Linux in general, no matter the distro. So it's overall quite a good thing.
