Libervis revision updates

Since I accidentally deleted the last update thread on revisions and considering that this revision is taking a while I thought I'd start a new one. Following a little piece of wisdom Taco told me, that it's better to keep people in the know even when there is no real progress than just keep quiet. In fact, it's not that nothing is happening.. it's just not happening publicly yet.

I've made quite a bit of progress in making the actual envisioned design for the new Libervis into a CSS theme (dark by default). I spent a good part of yesterday exploring various additional CSS tips and techniques in order to apply some really streamlined design elements on the new Libervis. I really feel I need to bring it close to "perfection", so to speak.

We are making an impact. (the personal success story thread)

I went into an (American public) school computer lab (which unfortunately uses Windows (some use OS X) and MS Office) to finish up an assignment at lunch today. While I was working, I overheard the person in charge of the lab at the time (I think just a librarian) talking to some teacher about what they were going to teach (or give a guest presentation about to) a class. I think it was a photography or art class, but it was certainly some class that involved copyright.

My first thoughts were "Oh great, feeding more disgusting propaganda bullshit to the masses." To my positive surprise, the person doing most of the talking actually knew what she was talking about: I heard her talk about fair use, what is required to copyright a work, how wrong Disney is, and Creative Commons. I had to focus on my assignment almost until class started, but as I was leaving I suggested that free software be mentioned as well. Her response was like "Oh, you mean like open source?" I said kind of, but did not have the time to explain thoroughly. I got the impression that she liked the idea and was actually going to mention it.

Coral QQ Developer Sentenced to Prison

link

Note: Coral QQ is a "loader" program for the QQ IM program (a popular Chinese IM program), which made several enhancements to QQ and also blocked the ads.

Here's a good example that gratis proprietary software can be the same danger as pay-to-use proprietary software.

just a note: Tencent also has several patents like "use smiley in IM program" or "software UI skinning", and they are also actively changing their protocol to block free software like Pidgin (

Finally got it - the new mockup

So.. I finally tackled this today, and pretty much conceptualized the site as it should be.

So.. basically, we will have 3 main types of content and four main category sections:

Content: Articles, Forums, Links
Categories: Community, Technology, Art, Philosophy

There can be other types of content, but they'll be secondary and auxiliary, such as the archive for old news items (we don't do news anymore) and wiki (as a separate install or.. whatever, we'll see.. in any case it's a secondary resource).

Now, the way this will work is this. All of the above content types support full categories, so they will all have four categories as named above. No more and no less. They can support tagging within themselves, but that's additional. As long as we have *same* category names for all of those three content types we've got our framework going, the framework that essentially conceptually splits the site in four major parts.

Preventing a monopoly of opinion

Some here might know about my recent change of worldview into one that is rather radical and easily disagreed with (because it clashes with current norms and beliefs so severely that even open minded thinkers find themselves hard pressed to envision it).

Interestingly, this actually contributed to the diversity of opinion on this site. For a while there we used to be quite compatible in our views and hence easily agreed. We talked about specific issues and exchanged ideas, but rarely really took contrary positions which would really challenge us to respond to the contrary statements or begin doubting our own opinion.
