Do you use firefox instead of IE and why?

 libervisco |  |

I'd like to start a discussion here on why is Firefox better than Internet Explorer and see how much of libervis.com visitors use Firefox to view this site Smiling

Personally, i use firefox out of principle as i use all free software and am on linux mandrake OS. I also think that many other linux native browsers can be much better than the old IE.

But however, Firefox is really better for me, funny thing, it seems even better when used in windows instead of IE than on linux (but that might be just my experience).

And why is it better? Well, it has an efficient pop-up blocker natively installed, had a great extensions and plug-ins system that you can so easily install new features just by going to the rich extensions site and install it right away, without download (but you have a download option also). it's also faster, more stable and it has a multi-tabbed browsing which makes your browsing experience much more intuitive and also faster..

There is alot to like about it, but i'd like to hear everybody do you and why do you use Firefox browser instead of IE and what do you like the most about it?

Thank you
Daniel

reasons why I use firefox instead of IE:

- ever tried to run IE on linux? it should be possible with wine, but it's too much work for me.
- more secure
- faster
- all the plugins I might ever want, and none of them are spyware/adware
- the red cats/green flavor theme is cute

I have just started uysing Firefox latly and have found some really great features.

1. Tabbed Browsing, is just great you have all the pages open at the top rather then hunting through your start bar to find the one you want. Which cleans up the start bar a little.

2. The pop up blocker, The google toolbar has done ok for me but it still let through a rather malious pop-up which manged to install spyware on my other computer which killed IE so out with IE in with Firefox.

And my laptop is getting the Firefox Treatment now as even though i Own windows on the laptop(had to couldnt buy it without) i am trying to keep the rest free with Open Office and now Firefox.

Hello All

I use firefox for the three main reasons

1. Tabbed browsing though netscape provide the same but is too slow on starting the browser.
2. Agent switcher.
3. Post does not vanish the data and as I myself is a developer I dont have ti retype the whole stuff again and again.

Also would like to say something on
The pop up blocker
As I always had the google bar on my IE top when used it found this thing there too and so I dont see it as a plus when I use Firefox.

- more secure
Would like to know on what basis
- faster
Did you mean loading of browser or page retrieval.

Thanks

The pop up blocker and the google bar are not the same thing. I don't want that googlebarthing but I do want pop up blocking. Firefox has built-in popup blocking, IE hasn't.

- security by obscurity. scriptkiddies are more likely to target IE because 95% of internet users uses IE.
- faster fixes
- no activeX
- do I really need to tell you IE resembles a swiss cheese? sure, firefox is probably not perfectly secure, but it is very hard to beat IE in insecurity.
AFAIK the most serious security bug in FF was that if you saved a special file, files in the same directory might be deleted. this is nothing compared to executing arbitrary code, which was IE's most serious bugs (in fact still is because many home users don't ever upgrade)

both browser loading and page rendering. page retrieval speed depends on the speed of your internet connection.

Still finding the time to download it and try it.

But not sure if I would like it, especially since my site won't display correctly in firefox and I am all to lazy to fix that! Laughing out loud

Eh.. and libervis.com actually looks better in Firefox than in IE, right? Eye-wink

But seriously freak, you should really check FF out, it's a "freakin'" great browser, definitely better than what you're using right now, whatever it is. Sticking out tongue

Lol...

Will try after my exams. By the way, you might want to take a look at libervis.com in IE, there might be some browser issues...

libervisco | Re:Do you use firefox instead of IE and why? | Fri, 2004-10-15 01:45

Do you really think i haven't already? Eye-wink

It looks slightly different, but fine. I had some png images issues and stuff, but i handled it.

However, if you anyone starts noticing some "anomalies" feel free to beat me to it and let me know.

Thanks

Issit?

The top of this page where it goes Topic Options, Rate thread etc. looks ugly on my laptop, running windows XP home SP2, IE6, 1024x768 resolution.

Ugly, but functional/

Hm.. i admit i havent' tested the new NEWBB 2 on IE yet as i am on linux... I however have a dual boot with win98 with IE so i'll do it ASAP.

However, it sometimes happens that this newbb header doesn't loads properly because of those pop-up menus, even on FF, but it happens only occasionally and probably depends on your connection as with lower connections it happens that complex sites like this don't load up perfectly always.

Thank you for pointing this issue. I'll see and try to fix..

Man, are you lucky..

well, i'm gonna look at that glitch in IE.

Thanks
Daniel

Now i see what you mean by "ugly". IE doesn't displays those transparent png images correctly as it is just so orphan and old piece of crap that won't keep up the standard.

I'll try to fix this by giving every image a background it's set on or search for a better solution...

I hate that IE crap..

I sure do use FireFox instead of IE. I just love the extensions that you can install on the side.

marulu | Why Firefox is better | Sat, 2008-04-05 17:00

Firefox is definitely better than Internet Explorer and it is for free.
Check out all the advantages Firefox has to offer you and you can even download it for free by clicking on the link/button at the bottom of the page at :
http://my-internet-tips-and-tricks.blogspot.com/2008/03/why-use-firefox.html
You can download it and use Internet Explorer and Firefox side by side till you are sure of yourself.

tbuitenh | The page linked to by marulu | Sat, 2008-04-05 18:08

The page linked to by marulu above has one of those firefox/google toolbar buttons (does google still pay for those?). Spammy.

By the way, it's funny to see I wrote about the security by obscurity of firefox. It may have been true 4 years ago, but not anymore. The other security arguments still hold, of course, even much more so than back then.

Whistler | Google still pays for these | Fri, 2008-04-11 07:18

Google still pays for these things, but it's much lower than 4 years ago (originally it's $0.1, and now it's $0.01 per download).
Not sure if it's because they have realized the negative effect of such ads.
