Expanding Libervis.com - together!

Expanding Libervis.com - together!

In it's eight month existence, libervis.com has been striving to be a Free Software Community Center on the web that will allow anyone with bare interest to join and discuss FS related issues as well as participate in other activities.

However, such a free and open approach naturally led to the expansion of topics being discussed beyond the Free Software realm. We have thus investigated issues like expanding Free Software development model to other areas of economy (and even cooperatively wrote an article about it), Free Music, Free Hardware and basically anything that conforms to the open minded views that adhere to the "Free/libre Culture" standards.

Therefore, libervis.com is soon to be transformed, that is, reorganized to fit a new modified goal as a Free Culture Community center that will strive to unify all Free Culture communities and all interested in them by allowing them full freedom of communication and expression as described in this wiki draft.

Libervis.com was already moving into that general direction and the changes that are to be made will therefore not be as drastic as it may seem. New categories will be added in blogs, news, articles etc. and forums are gonna be reordered to fit the new topics coverage. After this change has been finished, libervis.com should be even more appealing and intuitive, organized to perfectly adhere to the mission it is set to fullfill.

We will also be writing a manifesto that will demonstrate our goals and purposes and motivate every reader to join and discover the beauty of the most free online community.

I now invite you to read the draft (which will be further changed and developed) and post your questions, comments and suggestions, anything you think is important to address.
Your suggestions may be in regard to new forum organization, categorization of certain site sections or a mission itself and anything else on your mind about this.

BTW: Editing of that wiki draft page is, of course, allowed. However, please don't delete anything for now. Just add what you would like to add on a next line, possibly formating it as italic text.

Thank you very much
Daniel

I think you cut-n-paste the wrong link, shouldn't it be this one?:

Oh right, sorry, i fixed it.

Now i see why Pascal is talking about coffee. :-)

Yes Pascal, Free Coffee too.. How to get a free coffee, grow it in your backyard. And no patents or copyright should stop you from doing that. ;-)

Just to note, i consider Free Software issue to be probably the biggest part of the Free Culture. I began reading "Free Culture" book by Lawrence Lessig and it is just that, new technology of internet that brough us to the problematic issues of protecting and re-establishing Free Culture. And as you know, software is what powers the internet, among other things. I say that just because you don't think this is suddenly gonna be a less friendly place to talk about things like GNU/Linux, BSD's, RMS, ESR, OpenOffice.org and other Free Software related issues. The only difference is that the site will allow you to talk about even more, and all that IS related to Free Software and Open Source movements.

Thank you
Daniel

Re: Expanding Libervis.com - together!

I don't want to grow my own coffee? At least not in such a temperate climate. *Imagines nice, warm steaming mug of a long black...*

Mhh.

Anyway - expanding Libervis - no objections from me.

Re: Expanding Libervis.com - together!

Great. Anyone else that feels uncertain about this or has any questions or suggestions, i can't wait to hear it!

Anyway, i have a proposal for new forums organisation which is now posted for your review and modification on this wiki page.

For your convenience i am posting it here as well:

:: General Issues ::

General Philosophy
Legal issues
Media (news, television, web etc.)
- Online (web)
- Offline (TV, Radio, Newspapers)

:: Free Cultures ::

Software
- Operating Systems
- Free Software Philosophy
- Developers
Music
Visual
- Graphics
- Video
Hardware
New Technology

It is formated like this:

:: Category ::

Forum 1
- Subforum 1
- Subforum 2
Forum 2
- Subforum x

Some additional subforums may be added in the future as needed, so there is no need to go mad about it. The most important is to categorize and organize forums to intuitively cover all Free Culture related topics and issues as well as allowing for expansion both in subforums or dividing existing forums in more parts (you never know, in five years even that could be neccessery due to possible number of posts;)

Note that categorization of some other sections on libervis (such as articles) may reflect the organization of forums.

One more thing. Since we are changing something significant about libervis.com here i think that it is also appropriate to change the header graphics (not essentially the official logo, but the design, although it is not a crucial question.
What may be more important is the slogan, which should also be changed from "Free Software. Free People." to something that reflects the bigger picture in which Free Software falls, Free Culture. I'm open to any suggestions, as always.

Thank you
Daniel

Re: Expanding Libervis.com - together!

I like the idea of expanding Libervis to cover all issues concerning free culture (it is natural because we were dealing with most of that issues, as you already mentioned).

And that forum organisation looks fine to me, but the name "Free Cultures" for that second forum sounds a bit strange to me (it looks as if there are more free cultures, but in fact there is only one). Maybe it would be better to name it something like "Free Subcultures" or "Free Culture Areas" or "Free Culture Issues" or something like that.

About the slogan, we could simply expand it just as we are doing with Libervis. So, "Free culture. Free people." or "Free culture. Free mind." are what comes to my mind at this moment. I like the second one more because it amplifies the real meaning of word "Free" (exactly that meaning that we want it to have).

Re: Expanding Libervis.com - together!

Yes, i agree with both the slogan and the name of that "Free Cultures" category..

Slogan "Free Culture. Free Mind." sounds good to me, especially considering that Free Culture is about freedom to create and build upon older creations, and creativity comes from the mind. Restricting creativity in a way restricts your mind from "thinking", coming with new ideas.

"Free Culture. Free People." also sounds good, since people are only free when they are able to create. Again, it hits the mark..

I think i'd leave this to you guys to choose what you like. Everyone that wants to, pick your favourite.

As for the name of that category, maybe it could be "Free Culture Products" or "Free Culture Creations" or "Free Culture Creativity"?

Your propositions also seem fine. Any more suggestions?

Also, i made a quick possible header just to demonstrate an idea of using matrix falling signs motive in a header. Reason is simply because Free Culture as such is in opposition to massive control of our creativity, and thus in a way our mind, which is a comparation to the "matrix" from that movie... Anyway, it's nothing definite, the header has to be designed to nicely fit the way the existing one fits..here is the image.

Suggestions, comments and questions are still welcome, always..
Thank you

Re: Expanding Libervis.com - together!

In ::Free Culture:: I'd like to see a forum Free Culture History and Background.
The concept of sharing ideas is not exactly new. I think it's important that we show intellectual property is quite recent foolishness, and most of history it has been the right (free) way.

By the way, please, no matrix logo. What are we, a bunch of cyberpunks?
...thinking of alternative idea...
Hmm, what about something with a penguin and a flying dove? Free software, freedom, peace...

Indeed. That is exactly what big part of the book "Free Culture" by Lawrence Lessig talks about. Free culture was always our tradition and law took care that it properly adapts to new technologies as they came (although with delays) to balance things out (between rights of the authors of existing "past" content and rights of new derivate "future" content). However, as the end of the 20th century came by, copyright laws were unbelieveably extended making virtually everything regulated. It was extended in every way possible (duration, scope, reach...) as a response to the "threat" that internet posed for the existing creators, now those who are enabled to rule by preventing others to create and innovate. Anyway.. you know this already. :-)

We can add a history forum as a subforum of "generall philosophy" since "Free Cultures" wont be called exactly that way, more like "Free Culture Creations" or something like that. But history forum will be there, nevertheless.

Hehe.. well.. maybe you're right. Penguin riding a flying dove maybe? :-)

Hmm.. i'm not much of an artists in SVG. I'm yet to figure out how could i make such an image..
Idea

Btw, maybe it's a good place to elaborate the existing libervis logo: It is an eye with the freedom symbol in the middle. That blue shade on the side is to represent Earth. So, it basically represents "vision of freedom on Earth": Libervision. Besides, "libervis" has a double meaning: libervis like libervision (as an acronym) and libervis as latin word for "most free". (liber= free or freedom, libervor = more free, libervis = most free).

I'm not actually looking for a new libervis logo as this may very well do, just for a new header design. :-)

Thank you
Daniel

Re: Expanding Libervis.com - together!

That matrix header logo doesn't look all that bad. I quite like it, but I also have to somewhat agree on what tbuitenh wrote concerning the cyber concept... hehe.

Mhh, the onlt thing I'd change on the matrix banner is to make the falling symbols have a green glow :-P. And of course this would just be contrary to what I just said above... hehe.

Just a question, who designed the whole graphics for the site in the first place? Was it you Daniel, because they look pretty flashy... :-)
