explorer destroyer

 tbuitenh |  |

Google is paying 1$ for every user you convince to use firefox instead of internet explorer. Shouldn't libervis participate in this?

So that's what I've been seeing on some sites.. How did I miss it, and I even have an adsense account. I'll be putting this up ASAP! Smiling

Thanks Taco for a great suggestion!

Although, Libervis.com has IE users already below 50% mark;

Firefox: 43.2 %
MS Internet Explorer: 32.5 %

But it would be nice to nail those 32.5 % down to the ground, to maybe some 5%? Let's do it. Eye-wink

Thanks

 libervisco | Re: explorer destroyer | Tue, 2005-11-15 22:49

Ah, unfortunately this firefox refferal program is currently available only to US publishers and since I am from Croatia (thus making libervis.com "based" in Croatia) we can't have that yet..

But Google says they are hoping to expand this to international publishers as well, so there.

In the meantime, feel free to comment on this and say if we should really participate (given most of Libervis visitors are Firefox users anyway) or at which level should this ad be set (from 1 to 3) where level 1 is least "aggresive" and level 3 doesn't let you access the site in IE. Laughing out loud

Cheers
Daniel

Restricting access to one browser would make us as bad as Microsoft in a sense, although having some kind of ad/encouragement for using Firefox is a great idea.

 tbuitenh | Re: explorer destroyer | Wed, 2005-11-16 12:05

I agree, level 3 wouldn't be good.
And think about those who are forced to use IE (internet cafe, work...)

 libervisco | Re: explorer destroyer | Wed, 2005-11-16 19:15

Good points.. definitely not level 3 then, but level 2 or 1 would probably be OK.. Level 1 might actually be enough..

I'll keep my eye on google adsense refferal programs to see when this becomes available internationally and when it does, it'll be implemented..

 libervisco | Re: explorer destroyer | Thu, 2005-12-01 05:52

This now became available internationally so the doors are open to implementing it on this site too. I'm just not sure anymore if that's such a good idea mainly because we could turn off some people and maybe do more damage than good..

So what do you think?

Btw, I at least added a normal ad in that "sponsored links" block on the left. Smiling

Btw2: This is cool http://www.killbillsbrowser.com/ Laughing out loud

Cheers
Daniel

 tbuitenh | Re: explorer destroyer | Thu, 2005-12-01 09:07

Level 1 shouldn't do any harm, but this big sponsored link seems good enough. Let's call it level 0 Smiling .

I think I'm going to set up a separate user for web browsing because I've been doing too much of it recently. I'll uninstall firefox and have a local google+firefox for that user only. It's also good for security by the way. IF there is a hole in firefox AND it is used it will only harm that user, which means no harm done.

 tbuitenh | Re: explorer destroyer | Thu, 2005-12-01 09:32

Well... This message was sent from firefox 1.5 Smiling For some reason it gave me a firefox without google toolbar. To be sure libervis gets its money, I installed google toolbar trough the same link.

For some reason all fonts in the menus of firefox (not on webpages) are huge... gotta find a way to fix that.

 Whistler | Re: explorer destroyer | Thu, 2005-12-01 11:15

well clicking that link in Mozilla Suite will result in downloading the Google Toolbar only, which is IMHO more or less advertising proprietary software...

and I still prefer just clicking the normal ads on this site to installing any proprietary software Sticking out tongue

That's an interesting setup, but it does push the security on a bit higher level.

Well, that could be a dollar more. Smiling Thanks.

Yes, I've tried it on other sites (since I am forbidden to click my own) and it does lead me to googlebar download which is although understandable (since it's one reason why google is doing it, to promote it's bar, not just Firefox), unfortunate..

However, the positive side to it is that IE users should be led to a full Firefox download link and then if they don't like googlebar they can just remove it (honestly it's nothing special, takes too much room there Laughing out loud ).
Another positive is that it might bring in a dollar or two more and help very bad stats with google lately (I've been earning nothing for some time and only Google knows why or so I hope).

I really don't know why Google wouldn't make it's googlebar and other of it's software Free. What do they gain from it being sort of proprietary freeware? Nothing IMO. Google *should* free it.

Thanks
Daniel

 libervisco | Re: explorer destroyer | Thu, 2005-12-01 19:38

I just installed Firefox 1.5 and as expected it feels a good deal faster than 1.0.x series. But just as with Taco I have fonts set rather large.. oh well, that can probably be remedied. Smiling

So far (few minutes of use) it's great. IE users, you don't know what you're missing. Eye-wink

 tbuitenh | Re: explorer destroyer | Fri, 2005-12-02 09:23

edit -> preferences -> content -> fonts & colors -> advanced -> display resolution -> system setting -> ok -> close -> restart firefox

 libervisco | Re: explorer destroyer | Sat, 2005-12-03 01:22

Thanks! That works great and generally fonts are fine now except on some pages where different fonts seem to be showing and at the smaller size for some reason, but there might be a fix somewhere in the settings. I'll play around.

All in all, this Firefox release is pretty impressive. The cut on the memory load is incredible and the performance is therefore so much better. Smiling

Whistler | (bumped this thread as this | Wed, 2008-01-30 08:18

(bumped this thread as this is related)

It seems Google's AdSense on Firefox has also done something nagative to free software. I actually know someone who was tricked into clicking the AdSense Firefox link by a site disguised as a porn/dating site (which only has a message like "your browser version is too low, please click here to update to the latest version of Firefox and come back again") Smiling, and had a bad impression on FF because of this (because he still didn't see the porn he wanted after installing Firefox, and he thought^H^H^H^H^H^H^H is still thinking Firefox developers are officially doing something like this) Sad.

There are also some kinds of Malware/viruses which will add a popup to IE when viewing any pages (yes... all of them used security holes of IE) which links to a page with an AdSense Firefox link, which actually leads some newbies think that "Firefox is malware/virus".

All these are made by people who just want to get some money from Google and absolutely not free software supporters, and these are actually harmful enough. Too bad it seems Google isn't quite aware of the issue, as I can still see many things like these.

By not giving money, we can make sure those who are spreading Firefox are with a pure intent. But things could become very nasty when there are monetary reasons, and those who are running Firefox AdSense are no longer purely supporters of Firefox.

Have you tried to contact Google about this?

 Whistler | When I e-mailed them a long | Thu, 2008-01-31 06:14

When I e-mailed them a long time ago, I only got a reply like "Thanks for contacting us, your suggestions are forwarded to our professionals" and nothing more.

libervisco | They, or someone in Google, | Thu, 2008-01-31 09:16

They, or someone in Google, should then be aware of this. Whether that someone will do something about it is to be seen. I suppose multiple reports may get the process sped up.

 a thing | how | Thu, 2008-01-31 22:21

Okay then. What address did you email? What specifically was the address of the offender?

 Whistler | the virus/spyware one is: | Fri, 2008-02-01 03:00

the virus/malware one is: http://www.google-fire-fox.cn/ [down now, yay! ...but too bad the virus is still spreading :(]

I sent the mail to:

I just found another site disguised as a video site (but when you click "play" it will just say "we only support Firefox, please click here to download" even if I'm already using FF): http://www.21257.cn/

gotta report it.

EDIT: still received the same reply (EXACTLY the same as the previous one... guess it's an autoreply or something like that) Sad
