Finally got it - the new mockup
For those who like light themes, here is the light version of the mock up. One of these versions will be picked as the default, but users will likely be able to select between them.

Comments on the light version: A natural next step in the evolution of the libervis theme. A little bit boring.
Comments on the dark version: That looks wonderful! Just lose the "fashionable" reflection below "Libervis", I've never liked these and now this trick is getting old too just like the floral themes that were everywhere for a while, and the horizontal stripes before that. If you want to know why I dislike such reflections: they suggest 3d in a page of which the rest is 2d, which is just... wrong. Try a different effect, maybe a glow or something. Or keep it that way, since AFAIK I'm the only one who thinks 3d reflections are so ugly they almost make me scream
.
Thanks Taco. Well, the 3D effect might indeed require a little imagination for it to fit with the otherwise 2D setting.. Maybe the header is folded, or just that part of the header to the backward hence making the reflection of the title visible..
Oh well.. anyway, I might actually remove it and experiment with some other options. I agree it's often used and not really novel, just kinda nice looking (which is probably the reason it was widespread in the first place).
I figured you'd be among those to like the darker theme more, along with a_thing. Kdean seems to like lighter more.. so far that'd be 2 to 1 for dark so dark may be default and light may be the one switchable to.
Thanks

So.. I finally tackled this today, and pretty much conceptualized the site as it should be.
So.. basically, we will have 3 main types of content and four main category sections:
Content: Articles, Forums, Links
Categories: Community, Technology, Art, Philosophy
There can be other types of content, but they'll be secondary and auxiliary, such as the archive for old news items (we don't do news anymore) and wiki (as a separate install or.. whatever, we'll see.. in any case it's a secondary resource).
Now, the way this will work is this. All of the above content types support full categories, so they will all have four categories as named above. No more and no less. They can support tagging within themselves, but that's additional. As long as we have *same* category names for all of those three content types we've got our framework going, the framework that essentially conceptually splits the site in four major parts.
The homepage will feed these three content types, latest items, from all four categories, but will somehow mark them (by color likely) so it is know where it comes from. Clicking on the header of each "latest" content block leads to the page displaying all of that content.
Conversely and obviously, clicking on one of the four main links in the header menu leads to a page overviewing all of the content of that category (from all three content types).
Anyway, please take a look at the mock up image to get the idea.
Note that within forums, which are also split between these four types, there may be a few subforums one of which may be dedicated to special projects being in development by the Libervis community.
We're really gonna emphasize cooperation and working together on cool new ideas and projects for freedom.
Life's not read-only. So.. I keep writing.
