From the heart
This is a must I think, I am angry! Hear me roar! A passionate and well reasoned critique of of the IP invasion of the arts.
After reading this, I think that a bit more passion from the defenders of culture libre might be a good thing.

Wow, quite a rant, but well written imo, it was very readable.
As a part of my Design and Tech course I have to look through books on Memphis, Art Deco and Macingtosh styles - I take things I like from them and make a derivative work, without this freedom I'd mostlikly not be able to design and build anything since it would copy 'someones' style.
Money is such an evil when it comes to IP and such ideas, it's sad that people are desparate to screw everyone else over to get some money.

That post is so right on! I think it actually describes the core of the whole problem that the Free Culture movement should be fighting against. He so bluntly, but rightfully states what must be the truth; building upon art of the past is a must and inevitable in making new art. No man is an island in itself. Every human being is inspired by works of others and it therefore more or less indirectly or directly derivates from the work of others.
This is why it is sometimes hard to define what exactly a derivate is. How much do you need to change a work to call it a unique work instead of a derivate? I think noone will ever come to a definite conclusion for that question, and it is so senseless to even try to answer it.
The only sphere in which this matter is forced is the sphere of lawyers who increasinly represent these so called representers of culture and their dirty interests which infact have absolutely nothing to do with making culture - from music record labels to these art trusts that this guy is talking about.
And for the pete's sake, if an artist is dead how the hell can they even dare do these things in his name. His art should be in public domain instead of it's value being spoiled like it is by these idiots.

I think it definitely wouldn't hurt.
Maybe we should just be more brave to come out and say certain things instead of trying to act nice and sweet to everyone (in other words "suck up" to everyone). Unfortunately, the very percieved leader of this Free Culture movement tends to suck up more than shout out (like in his recent DRM mess ups). Some passion eh!?
I say we ought to crush major record labels, art trusts and other culture vulture organizations. It's an information age. We have internet! We don't need them so they should just beat it!
