Libervis in Second Life on the Free and Open Island

Libervis in Second Life on the Free and Open Island

Quite a while ago we were invited right here on Libervis by Catharina Jacobus, as she is called in Second Life, to come visit the Free and Open Island there.

Today when I went to Second Life (using a GNU/Linux client) I went there and spent a bit time, talked to them, explored etc. Catharina remembers Libervis.com and she posed an interesting suggestion, which is actually something Taco (tbuitenh) has already mentioned before in one of our conversations. The idea is to open a place for Libervis in Second Life. Catharina said that there is still enough space on the island for our own land where we can build our own promotional place for Libervis Network.

However, there is a real price to this. To get the bit of land (she mentioned 1024 something, can't remember what the currency was) we would have to pay $25 and then almost $7 a month. So, it would have to be a financial investment. Doesn't seem much, and it isn't much, but it is an addition to my monthly web related bills (I already pay $25 for our VPS, something that will at some point have to be upgraded).

So the obvious question is will that be worth it? The point Catharina made about that is that a lot of Windows users visit Second Life, so having presence there would be one way to reach them. Since Libervis Network has Nuxified.org which really aims at spreading Free Software by helping people use it, we would really welcome any Windows user that may come through any means. So that's one valid point. Another thing is that they, from the Free and Open Island, will actively be working to promote it. Actually they plan on doing virtual courses there. I also noticed there is more than 300 members in their Second Life group.

So when I look at it, increasingly it seems like a yet another potentially beneficial cooperative partnership like the few existing ones we with Nuxified.org.

So, it's an idea, and for now all I'd like is your opinions.

[offtopic]I'm aware we have some other things on the "backburner" perpetually, like the Libervis Podcast so I'm really not looking for adding yet another vaporware kind of project to the list, but ideas can never hurt.

And.. well, the podcast will be a reality eventually. I'm just still focused elsewhere at this time (but, I learned about mumble, got new headphones with built in mic so I'm getting prepared for the podcast too Eye ).[/offtopic]

To determine if the price is

To determine if the price is worth it, we have to consider what exactly we would want to do in secondlife. A shiny libervis building with nothing and nobody in it will be a waste.

I suggest we do the podcasting thing first, then use secondlife to add some interactivity to it: let sl users listen along while the podcast is being recorded, and let them ask questions and make remarks which will be added into the show as it is made.

Seems reasonable to me.
