New advertising

New advertising

If anyone wonders about the banner ads rotating on top of the site and them occasionally being animated, I'm experimenting with some CPM (cost per thousand impressions) ad networks in an attempt to back up for text link ads that were sustaining this network so far.

I am working with the ad network of the ads currently active to filter out the animated and inappropriate stuff per our ad policy.

Of course, if it ultimately doesn't work out with this or any other network I will revert to manually offering ad space for sale directly rather than via an agency..

I'll let you know when I believe all has been filtered properly and you feel free to report if you see anything inappropriate here.

Thank you.

Clicking the annoying

Clicking the annoying blinking "1 message" ad starts a download of hotbar.exe, which apparently is spyware. It will also show a page that tries to convince viewers to start the automatically downloaded .exe file (see attachment).

Evil stuff.

"live and work in the USA": this one links to usafis.org . The second through fifth google results for "usafis.org" (the first is the website itself, of course) claim it's a scam.

My apologies. Both of these

My apologies. Both of these have just been blocked.

Of course if it ends up that most ads served by this network are of this kind we'll just take them off.. It appears their quality levels in terms of what they advertise are quite low.. but we'll see. It's still just a test run.

A little detail: maybe the

A little detail: maybe the ads should be aligned to the right instead of centered, so they won't overlap with the libervis logo.

natively.com: this one unfortunately links to proprietary software.

"bored? check out cool

"bored? check out cool videos free!" links to Zango, the same maker of ad and spyware already mentioned before.

I actually filtered the

I actually filtered the whole Zango category (yes, they have a whole category just for them), but it seems to be showing in multiple categories. I've seen the same thing elsewhere. Even after disabling instant messaging and internet categories I still couldn't rid of smiley ads. Also, since banning goes on a per-ad basis rather than per-URL, any time a new ad gets added to the system it will be auto-approved. I'm gonna ask if it's possible to ban per URL.

Anyway, now I've really filtered quite a lot of categories and in what's left banned most of the banners.. It would seem 90% of the stuff there is just crap.. Makes me wonder if most of internet users are some cheesy fun chasers who love funny (as in often dirty) videos, go "awwww" until their jaw drops about those smileys and .. guess what.. use Windows!

Geez makes me think I'm really a separatist already... Visiting sites that I do I'm almost oblivious to the web that is out there serving MOST people.. The fact that it pays off for people to advertise all that crud just speaks for itself.

Anyway, now I see mostly public service ads.. I guess they don't pay.. they're just the nicest thing to see on Libervis so far from this network.

"sharpen your English"

"sharpen your English" (whitesmoke.com): proprietary software again! And patent pending too.

Yeah, of course, new ads

Yeah, of course, new ads shows and it's proprietary software.. Oh great well I guess that network is gonna be shafted, and while we're at it, ALL networks.

We're gonna be our own good damn network.

I think there would be quite

I think there would be quite some demand for a network that enforces our advertising policy (and possibly other policies). But how do we move money around between advertisers and owners of websites without trouble? It takes more than a credit card, I think.

It's not a new idea. We've

It's not a new idea. We've been talking about it before and we've also been hitting the same snag, the money transfer issues.

It would probably require more than online payment services too.

But anyway, what I meant by being our own network was serving only our sites, selling advertising manually and without any intermediary.
