New Libervis Logo (2008)
Erm.. you mean Ubuntu?
Well, in that case anything that is round and consists of three parts will remind of Ubuntu, and that'd IMHO go a bit too far. It's like comparing an Eiffel tower to the tower in Pisa, both are high and popular.
It may be that part of what makes it seem familiar may be, well, the fact that it actually incorporates certain elements you've seen around Libervis.com for 3 full years now. In the fourth one it's the box, and the green, blue and red colors are exact ones from the sun spikes in the old logo. There's plenty to be familiar.
In a sense, the feeling of it being familiar yet the incapability to make a real parallel between the logo and ones you've seen before may exactly be a selling point for the logo.
So... what do you guys think about the logo itself, aside from what it does or doesn't remind you of?
Edit: Speaking of familiarity here are the things this logo can be associated with (fourth one):
- Peace sign, albeit upside down
- Guy reading a book
- Sun coming out of the box
- Community - three different people in a circle of collaboration (ubuntu style)
- Diversity and creativity (three colors)
- Technology vs. freedom (box vs. the sun it lets to shine instead of restricting it, basically symbolizing the very core of what Libervis is).
I might have some additional mock ups though, but I'm not sure if I'll manage to beat this one.
Thanks

But could you almost exactly fit images of these towers over each other?
I'm going to try that with your logo and the ubuntu logo now.
(EDIT: see attachment)
I couldn't say I feel much about your logo designs, sorry. I think I'd make a more photorealistic version of a light rising out of a box.

Heh.
Well.. yeah. But my point mostly stands, not that I really care that much about it.
The thing is I was making that logo without Ubuntu or its logo in my mind. It came from the idea of replacing rays with colored circles. Just because Ubuntu happens to do something similar shouldn't mean everyone else from then on who uses a similar yet still fairly unique principle must be frowned on for doing it.
Photorealistic logos don't work, don't scale that well. It must be iconic. I mean feel free to do it if you'd like, but photorealistic means too much tiny details which just wont scale.
Anyways.. I'm putting in some additional proposals on the next post.
I think I'd make a more photorealistic version of a light rising out of a box.
It isn't photo realistic perhaps (since I doubt that would work), but this might be what you had in mind. It's light coming out of the box.

Cheers

Here are some more..

Of course, that last smiley one is not seriously in the contest here.
I best like number 5 as it's dead simple. I just hope there isn't something like that already used by some other company or project.. although unique color codes and overall context might not make that matter much. Oh and it's not Ubuntu-ish for those who mind that.
Here is the shiny version.

Yes, it has a little bug on its bottom corner. Gonna try to fix that.
If anyone has any other ideas or proposals feel free to post. I'm putting the SVG sources in here (look below).
Cheers

I know your reasons for the logo, libervisco. However, no aspect of the current logo, nor the propsed ones REALLY make me think "freedom".
There was discussion on the Gobuntu mailing list a while ago about what the logo should be and that discussion really hit on something: there is no universal symbol for freedom. A symbol must clearly convey the idea without mistakenly conveying another idea. You'll notice that the round thing reminds people of Ubuntu. While that might be unintentional, it DOES call to mind Ubuntu and by that reasoning is a poor image for Libervis (and anything else).
I'd say there's no good options in there, and I have absolutely no idea what a good one would be.
I am fully aware there is no one universal logo for freedom, and I think that's actually a good thing. If there was everyone who promotes freedom would end up using the same logo or would strive to incorporate that single symbol into their own.
I think, though, that if you combine "freedom" with some contextual information like "responsible use of technology" which results in technology not being used to restrict freedom, there may be certain ways to express that.
The "sun out of the box" metaphor is suitable for Libervis if anything than for one reason: it's what we've been traditionally using. And even if it is not immediately obvious it is easy to explain, the sun is getting freed from the confines of the box so it can shine freely. The relation to freedom then becomes apparent.
However, my goal isn't to come up with the best possible symbol for freedom. It is to come up with a simple, easy to remember logo for Libervis which will be effective in further marketing. Of course, to do that it has to have a relation to what Libervis stands for and therefore it is good that it is not just some random draw up, but that it has some metaphor behind it.
I am in fact so convinced and compelled lately to redefine the visuals of Libervis to a point of it having a top notch marketing campaign on its behalf and on behalf of everything it represents, all projects it contains etc. I believe strongly nowadays that marketing is the best way to get heard, to be seen and to get a chance to say and do something really significant.
Especially on the web, without attention you can't do much. I wish to create a compelling "world of Libervis" visual identity that will attract a lot of people, tell them what we are and get them to cooperate with us.
I quite like 8.
The light coming out of a box was not quite what I meant. I meant something very similar to the current logo, but with a box that looks more real, and a sun that looks like a light shining into the camera. The downside of my idea is that it probably only works on a dark background.
I have nothing against Ubuntu GNU/Linux, but having a logo that can be fit on their logo almost exactly, and a site about subjects that remind of the ubuntu principle... that's not good, the first impression will be that we're affiliated with Canonical, or we are yet another site about Ubuntu GNU/Linux. Actually logo 4 would be great for a project creating documentation for Ubuntu GNU/Linux!
I know you didn't intentionally create a logo that looks like the Ubuntu logo. Our subconscious can do funny things when we try to express ourselves visually.
Consider all the MS logos that look quite like freedomware related logos (something that also looked like the Ubuntu logo, "longhorn" (= gnu?), iirc there are more). I don't think they're ripping off these logos intentionally, they just choose logos that feel familiar to them... and those logos feel familiar because they spend lots of time reading about freedomware!
To be honest I don't really understand why you want a very different logo for libervis. I think the current is wonderful, and you won't easily create something I like better.
But I'll get out of this discussion now, since I don't have time to draw anything myself (I hate that).

I'll see if I can build on it a bit more then...

I see.. But yeah, the logo must be adaptable to various circumstances, and besides, by default our sites are mostly of white background.

I understand.. I'm dropping the #4 in its current form then.

It doesn't have to be very different. As for why I want a new one, as said, it is because the current ones don't scale that well to smaller sizes and aren't simple enough IMHO. I believe at this point I am capable of making a logo that would work even better than the current ones. Especially the Libervis Network logo as seen on Libervis.net, which just looks clunky.. it was basically the first revision and the derivative of the current (and in fact the first) Libervis.com logo.
They have too many spikes which in turn in small sizes are hard to make out and doesn't look very good. Just look at the network bar.
And I just have a distinct feeling that it could be better, that this is not nearly as professional as it could.
Also, if my goal was to just have a logo for the sake of having it, I probably wouldn't give this much attention. But the context has changed. I want to establish a professional, consistent and very attractive visual identity under a single visual brand which would be easier to market. Libervis Network and Libervis.com are essentially merging into one, Libervis.com being its core, its intersection point. Libervis.com and Libervis Network will no longer have separate logos - they are one.
If we can have a more compelling, scalable, simple, easy to remember, eye-catching logo we could put it in banners, badges, promotional videos (say, on Nuxified.org promo videos or tutorials, at the end of the video), everywhere we possibly can - and it will form a solid perception of Libervis as a respectable name with a respectable purpose, worth watching, worth supporting, worth doing business with and worth joining. The current logos just don't inspire enough confidence as logos that would work in this bigger picture.
But I'll get out of this discussion now, since I don't have time to draw anything myself (I hate that).
Please, don't leave the discussion. You don't need to draw anything, but I desperately need some feedback. It's too little as it is.. I post a logo and can't wait to see someone comment on it.. and I end up having only you and perhaps a couple or more people. With no feedback it is going to be much harder to make the best decision. I appreciate your input, even if it is just "yes I like this one" or "I hate that one, and here is why".
Thank you!
Danijel
Here are some more mock up material, just to get the ideas flowing in case anyone is so bored.

One conservative idea would be to simplify the existing logo by just lessening the number of spikes and having it be only the sun itself. In the original logo, every spike color is repeated twice anyway, and we don't need that kind of redundancy.
In that case it'd look like the second from the top right.
It could be combined with the idea 8 from the last numbered upload like this:

But I'm not sure yet.. Just the sun seems a bit too plain and perhaps not very inventive. Rising sun as in above is a bit better though I suppose.
Opinions welcome.

When talking about graphics, I just HAVE to draw. It's an obsessive-compulsive thing
.
With some blur and rough edges, it looks more interesting. I'd use only the sun and no horizon for the tiny versions.

I think a spiffier font is needed when the blur and rough edges are kept.

Well we can use varying versions in varying situations. Your version is suitable on higher resolutions. With some polish and finishing touches it could look quite realistic.. If you put it in the dark it might look like a special Libervis sundown from space.
But the basic logo must not have blurs and as little rough edges as possible so it can scale better.
I've made what I called a Libervis Logo 2008 v1 RC, here. It also has banner, square, button and black&white versions.
Cheers
Haha, looks like we think alike. I just noticed that one last night when I was checking that community (and couldn't find any of our old posts btw). I like it.
I'm not sure if it'd work outside of the square frame though, but if it doesn't need to this is quite nice and picturesque.
I'd replace the planet/horizon by a line (like I did in my blurred/rough edges version), because I don't like the sudden straight cutoff of the round horizon.
As for my recent logo design: It doesn't need to fit anything else than a 100x100 box.
It's a rising star illuminating a road
. Not exactly the same thing as a sun rising out of a box... I guess I was subconsciously influenced by the old libervis logo though... and going back to libervis I guess it explains why I like the logos with horizons.
I updated it so that there is no sudden cut off, but an oval one. I tried a line before and didn't really like it.. it's either too thin or too thick for edges to look right. This way it's just right.
You can see it in the banner at the top or here.

It's not exactly the same indeed. The similarity is just in that it's a sun and a horizon, but that's all. Yours also has a road and feels more photographic in that frame, very romantic too - reminds me a bit of where I lived prior to this flat as it has a small road surrounded by big fields which look quite nice in the early dusk.
Cheers
That can easily be accomplished too.
A good basic logo is also, I think, the one which can be easily incorporated into various contexts or remixed into various things (as long as the original identity isn't lost). So, we could have wallpapers with photo realistic sunrises viewed from space, but with sun rays appearing as if they emit specific colors of the spectrum. And of course we could have humorous wallpapers with the sunrise logo being actually a mustache of a wise cosmic philosopher, patting his chin while pondering the nature of humanity on this small blue dot..
The logo can be easily framed into oval and square shapes too (whereas current Libervis.com logo is already in an oval shape by default
). For example I can imagine it in a crystal looking ball, photo realistic, a beautiful colorful sunrise. It's like a crystal ball that shows the future you want to see.. very bright, inspiring and ultimately motivational. You look at it and say, "this is not the future that will just happen, this is the future we will create".

Most significant revision to Libervis.com and Libervis Network in general deserves a logo change. The truth is this has been pending for a long time. The current logo of Libervis Network doesn't scale too well, nor does the Libervis.com one. The sun has too many spikes to look good if small enough. We could use something much simpler, yet with the same general message or idea, something more adaptable, something to stick with for a long time to come.
So here are some of the initial logo ideas:
All of these retain the idea of a sun coming out of the box, or some sort of a sun-like metaphor, as inspired by the original freedom symbol by Catherine Phelps. However, they are simplified modifications. Instead of many spikes and colors the logo now features red, green and blue, the three most basic colors from which we get all others.
1. Red and green are actually sides of the box, at the same time as they are spikes of the sun. One additional spike at the top adds a blue, but also disrupts the balance of the logo a bit.. It could be removed, but then we'll have yellow on white which doesn't work very well.
2. This is a version on the 1. above. The sun here is the white area, the green and red spikes are visible as sides of the box. The blue spike is missing, but the blue color is still present due to the blue box.
3. This one may remind more of a flower growing out of the box then the sun, but both metaphors might actually apply. Sun shines all colors, we have the most basic ones (red, green and blue) around the center, which is oval and supposed to be sun. Well... simplicity is the key.
4. This one I really like the most. The box is within the circle of colors and you can see the oval shape as if it is coming out of the box. This could be interpreted as the sun getting freed from the confines of the box and shining all the colors around (red, green and blue).
Simplicity is really the key here. The simpler we can make it the better. Once the basic shape and colors are picked the more shiny version can be made, with gradients and all.
Like for example the one below.
I broke my darn schedule staying up all night for this, crazy me.
Cheers
