Revamping libervis.com news system!
Thanks to Taco Buitenhuis here, we now have a fully working (still in in early stage, but ready to work) newswire system powered by vodka add-on he created for planet script.
It is a "newswire" that can automatically and effortlessly feed news from any site we choose all on one page. Every news item has a "view" (bringing you to the news page itself), "close" (allowing you to close a news item you already viewed) and the best, a "share" feature letting you easily share favourite news links with others througha de.lirio.us bookmark-site (like del.icio.us, only powered by Free Software).
Now, the idea is this, and i am open to all suggestions. That newswire is certainly going to be the main news feature of libervis.com (updated every two hours bringing latest news from all good free culture/free world related sites). The "news" link from main menu will lead to it.
On the homepage we will show some the "latest shared news" or "latest featured news" from de.lirio.us libervis news page. Those are all the news for which some libervis visitor clicked "share" and obviously thinking it's special or worth attention. That attention will be showed on libervis.com homepage directly. :-)
The existing "in the news" section will be hidden and replaced with "submit news" link instead, allowing every libervis visitor to submit their own news. These submissions will then after approval go to the main newswire.
We can feed like at least three items of that newswire on the homepage as well.. Then it would be two news blocks, one "newswire" and one "featured news" (for which people clicked "share").
However, the "newswire" block wont be there until we figure out how to feed all news, but it's not anything to hurry about, as the most important news will always find its way to the "featured news" block just by clicking "share". (as important announcements and so). (Too internal announcements will be made in announcements forum instead so that we don't bother the global newswire with libervis internal issues not worth it).
What ya people think? Any suggestions?
Thanks
Daniel

My suggestion is that I won't write any new code for a while, and focus on studying for exams instead
I would keep the news block on the front page the same, and let one editor *cough* you *cough* select the most interesting news from the shared stories.
Submitting news that is on a site not included in the newswire is very easy: submit it to de.lirio.us with the tag "libervisnews" applied to it.
By the way, I wonder what the owner of de.lirio.us will think when his site gets filled with items tagged "libervisnews" :ange3: ...
Heh, my little Vodka script was never meant to be more than a quick trick to be used by me and a few others. I hope it will handle this task it was not invented for well.

That's alright. The script works, and i can always study a bit into it and see if i can improve what needs to be improved. But it's ok..

Yeah.. well.. that is an option as well.. It shouldn't be a problem. The thing is that i'm not the only one who's gonna submit news, so i thought i would automate the thing by just including all libervis news into the newswire and let the people choose "the featured ones" which are then included on the homepage by putting it in de.lirio.us.

Hehe.. i don't think he'd mind. Those are just links so it's not like it's gonna eat bandwith or anything. I can contact him and let him know of what we do if you wish, but i don't think this kind of use should be a problem..

Well, it may be little and not originally meant for this, but it is small, simple, not too much can go wrong so i don't think there would be any problems. It's a great idea and a great trick you made there. :-)
Thanks

Awesome. Mhh, can us users add our blogs to the feeds?

If the area around my avatar is dark gray chances are you are using MS Internet Explorer, one of the few browsers that do not have full PNG-24 support. Considered trying [url=http://bro

Well, that depends. If your blog is a news blog then sure, but if not there is a better place for you. I will add a special category for blogfeeds, just like the current news headlines only with blogs inthere instead of news.
Thanks

Alright.. i set it up like this now..
Feature news block features selected news from the newswire (or anywhere for that matter). News submit by anyone through the "submit news" link goes to the newswire and will be in "featured news" only if "selected" for it..
The "shared news" link leads to the de.lirio.us page for libervis news where you can see all the news people "shared" by clicking on "share" from the newswire.
Newswire is great, but i'm still vaguely satisfied with the existing "featured news" feature.. probably more because i'm using a full blown articles system just for that, and feeding the submit news to the newswire. (But there aren't much alternatives if we want that "all in one" newswire thing, and we do :-P ).
Ah well, we'll see how it goes.. Maybe i find some nice module that'll fit the purpose better.
Of course, suggestions are always welcome (i don't even need to tell that anymore). ;-)

Reasonable. My blog is not news oriented, so I suppose we could add it to an external blog feed collection...?
http://wombat.theartcommunity.org is the place, and the feed is found at the bottom - you'll want the entries feed. :-)

Sure.. i'll be "revamping" that over the weekend.. Either i'm gonna clone the existing RSS headlines module (which btw, feeds those news below forums, in a block) and use another one for blogs and existing for those block headlines, or i'm just gonna reuse this one for blog feeds..
I think i'll just do the latter. :-)
Thanks :-)

Do I need to do something else (like submit it) or am I done by giving you that link? :-)
