RPG Maker
Does anyone like to play RPGs such as Final Fantasy and ChronoTrigger?
There are makers that make RPGs such as easy relatively easy to create. There is RPG Maker 2000, RPG Maker 2003, and RPG Maker XP. Of these, only RMXP has been released in English for Americans. The other two have only been released in Japan, but have been hacked and translated. There is also a hacked and translated version of RMXP. The RMXP community is not that large yet, but the RM2K and RM2K3 communities are sizable, with many games released.

I don't think this is very useful bacause 1) it only runs on that popular proprietary "operating system" and 2) it's proprietary software :-P
And I still prefer the C++ and SDL as that will result in some real games :-)

Yeah, but I'm using a maker because I am too occupied with other things than to write an RPG from scratch. I think there might be an open source maker somewhere, but I would have to find it.

There certainly must be free RPG makers out there.. In fact I've found some for you:
- Dungeon Craft
- Adonthell
I found them on this dmoz.org page where there may be other RPG maker software that are Free Software so you could take a look.
I'm not really into game making so I don't really know the difference between RPG makers and game engines and if they're the same thing, but I know there's alot of game engines that are Free Software and working on GNU/Linux OS. Just look at all the stuff on Linux Game Tome (HappyPenguin.org) for anything related to GNU/Linux gaming. Chances are you might find what you need there.

I have found one environment that is GPL and is available for both Windows and Linux. This system is called Sphere. I'm just now trying it out, so I don't know how good it will be.

Have you tried Sphere or rpg toolkit 3?

There's another one called BYOND - www.byond.com. Seems pretty powerful.

This looks kind of spammy, but it might not be.
Assuming this isn't just spam, free software is free as in freedom, not price.
