video card with free 3D support for GNU/Linux

video card with free 3D support for GNU/Linux

I'm looking for recommendations for video cards that will be able to play Nexuiz+Frozen Bubble and run KDE without any non-free drivers.

Unfortunately I think no popular cards has free drivers which is stable. The support of ATI cards in DRI can only support Radeon 9250 or earlier cards.

I don't care if it's popular or not.

I know about the old Radeons, I have one, but well, they're old.

Re: video card with free 3D support for GNU/Linux

I think that's still quite a problem for those that do care to be free of dependance on ATI and Nvidia. While they do seem to support GNU/Linux, even quite well maybe, their drivers are still proprietary and thus leave no room for things like maybe including them in the linux kernel and allowing out of the box support.

It would really be good to see free non-proprietary drivers with full support for these most popular and most used cards.

Until then, can anyone recommend a video card that doesn't use ATI or Nvidia chips (therefore not needing their drivers) and has free drivers, while still being good (fast, good quality and such)?

Back at the turnover of the century there still used to be some more competition in this area, not only between the two.

I found http://kerneltrap.org/node/4033 but that's just starting.

That would be great, but it's been a year since that article. I wonder if it got anywhere by now..
