Nexuiz/OpenArena Tournaments
From Libervis Wiki
Nexuiz and OpenArena section is a standard FPS tournaments section in which all tournaments contain a fairly similar structure. This is why we have this single general set of guidelines for all of them, for the sake of simplicity and minimizing the amount of content players need to read before understanding the rules.
Rules and guidelines for Nexuiz and OpenArena tournaments match the ones established for Nexuiz Ladders in all aspects except that matches are not always scheduled based on player challenges and some specific OpenArena configurations (where they couldn't be effectively matched to Nexuiz ladder rules).

Nexuiz and OpenArena Team Tournaments (CTF)
Each match involves two 3-player teams combating each other. There will be two maps played per match each chosen by one of the opposing teams. A map is won by the team who reaches the maximum number of flag captures first or the one who captures most flag before the time limit is hit. If one team wins one map and the other team wins another, it is a tie.
Game mode: Capture The Flag (CTF)
Members per team: 3
Qualifications
Prior to the final tournament, we will have a qualifications stage which will involve each team playing with every other team in a group awarding points for wins, losses, draws and forfeits. These points will then determine the qualifications chart from which the worst third of teams will be disqualified and the rest would proceed. There should be at least 4 teams per group.
Final Tournament
Single elimination bracket will be used.
Match configuration
- Nexuiz: Based on 3vs3 ladder configuration from Planet Nexuiz ladder rules
- OpenArena: Based on Nexuiz ladders when possible, otherwise default. Here is the configuration being used: OA CTF config
Nexuiz and OpenArena sole tournament (1vs1)
Each match involves two players fighting each other. There will be two maps played per match each chosen by one of the opposing players. Match winner is the one with highest ratios. A ratio is determined based on the score on each map and is multiplied to the ratio on the second map.
Example:
- Player A on map1 scores 18 - 12 against Player B
- Player A on map2 scores 5 - 25 against Player B
Calculating from the perspective of A, 18/12 = a ratio of 1.5 for map1 and 5/25 = 0.2 on map2. 1.5 * 0.2 = 0.3 which is less than 1 so he loses. Doing the same thing for player B would result in a number larger than 1 (3 actually) which confirms his win.
Qualifications
Prior to the final tournament, we will have a qualifications stage which will involve each player playing with every other player in his/her group, awarding points for wins, losses, draws and forfeits. There should be at least 4 players per group.
All players signed up and confirmed for participation will be divided into groups of 4 (more or less, depends on the final number of players) of which every player will play every other in their group. Once all matches are done the weakest two players of each group will be disqualified.
Final Tournament
Single elimination bracket will be used for the final tournament.
Match configuration
- Nexuiz: Based on 1vs1 ladder configuration from Planet Nexuiz ladder rules
- OpenArena: Based on Nexuiz ladder configuration when possible, otherwise default classic deathmatch configuration. You can see it here: OA 1vs1 config
Points system
The following points system, based on the standard default guidelines, will be used to determine the qualifications chart and further track the progress of each team or player. They apply to all OpenArena and Nexuiz tournaments.
- 4 points for a victory
- 2 points for a draw
- 1 point for a defeat
- O points for a forfeit
While the winner of the tournament is not directly determined according to the number of points, but rather its progression through the tournament bracket, it will serve the qualifications and also be counted for the final tournament winner for its eligibility for the universal price. More about that here.
Ping issues
When the two opposing sides in a match have a large ping difference, something to be determined in a pre-match server test (this is usually a situation between two players or team on the opposite sides of the globe) then the map chosen by one player will be played on a server with to him unfavourable ping and vice versa. Therefore, as you are playing a map of your preference you are playing on a server of the opposing player/team preference, which evens the odds.
