I agree with Alok on that forum, I also think the user need easy, simple and good interface for working. And Windows is the only one that have that. Its sad realy.... Maybe the programmers that work on Linux need to start working on the interface and make there OS more easy.

And they do, i believe.. New desktop linux distros seem to have a great and easy interface. It's all coming to it :-)

If being more like windows is "easier" I want the most difficult UI possible!
Really, the windows GUI is a big piece of ****. It assumes the user is an idiot.

Anyway, I'm working on the specification of a GUI that is truly user friendly. Like good old OpenLook, only better.
Sorry, nothing to be published anytime soon.

Just for correctness:
John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz created BASIC. Microsoft created M-BASIC (or maybe they stole it, who knows?). M-BASIC was not bad at all, I have programmed in M-BASIC compatible Omikron BASIC on an Atari ST. AFAIK there has never been an M-BASIC for Atari.

I think the best improvement for Linux would be to stop trying to make it look like windows. Macs don't look like windows, still they have happy users. Why would anyone want fake windows if you can have the real thing? We could create a GUI that makes windows and maybe even mac look silly.

I agree PK.

What does the term "easy" means anyway. We have set out to believe that windows is "easy", but we may just also create even a better, but much different GUI that will be even "easier" and make linux look "silly" as you said.

I believe that the term "easy" used for GUI's represents the ability to do the job done without any hassle and too much thinking on what and how should you do something to do the work you need to do.

It's all about getting used to it, finally. The easiness of windows may be different from easiness of linux, but both can be "easy". So, linux newbies may actually mix the easiness of linux with it being hard to use while they are just unfamiliar yet. Once they get used to the way linux GUI works they'll be happy with it.

Daniel :-)

A "good" measure for "easy" is said to be the time needed to learn to use it.
I don't completely agree with this. A longer learning time for the basics is not bad if the ideas scale well to the whole system, which makes the learning time for the whole system shorter.
I must say the windows gui used to be not bad, but now so many programs have "skins" it's a complete chaos. The unix desktop has always been a complete chaos with all those different widget sets.
If you use only programs that share one look and feel, Linux is easier than windows. Sadly, there are always a few programs that are not available for your favourite desktop environment.

Yeah... Mac OS X is very beautifull thing for me. You have great interface and, what's more important, you get UNIX.

Windows UI is crap for me. Every new version has something on some other place. It's a myth that Windows GUI is better. It's a myth that for Windows user will be hard to go on KDE or Gnome. It's hard as much is hard for Win2k user to go on WinXP.

And I watch new Linux users every day. They all are using Windows at home, and when they come to Uni and work on Linux, it looks like they were born with KDE.

Give me any operating system (including OS on the web page) that look more beautifull than this:

What's even best, show me OS that is usubale as this one. Eye

Hey Ivoks.

I'm looking at that screenshot and it reminds me of OS X GUI, but it's not quite it, except if it has different themes. If it's linux, please, i'd like to know which distro is it? Thank you.

Daniel :-)

Yeah, it's very similar to Mac OS X GUI. But, for me, it's better than Mac OS X. It's even better than Windows GUI.

Operating system? Linux. Distro? Debian GNU/Linux (no version) Sid. But, you can achive this with any distro. You just have to use Gnome 2.6 and visit http://art.gnome.org. Beside that, you have to find out what desklets are and add MacOSXish theme for Firefox Smiling

Simple as that Smiling
