Hello

The XOOPS Foundation has released the XOOPS 2.2 which is the most major release since 2.0.x which was active for more than a year as far as I know.

This makes upgrading the underlieing XOOPS install on Libervis.com from 2.0.13 to 2.2 the most major upgrade since Libervis.com has been founded. That's why I am posting this announcement, I just think it's worth of knowing, especially if any problems arise from it. (I certainly hope everything will be fine, it should be as it's a stable release).

There are some improvements and additional features in this new version. I'll post the major ones later once we have it up and running.

Btw, this might also resolve the current auto-login problem as well..

Thanks
Daniel

Re: A major software upgrade: XOOPS 2.2, due today.

Okay, the upgrade is finished. Everything went almost smooth. Actually, while I was upgrading the site was not showing and only displaying debug notices, warnings and errors. Then after I ran an upgrade script it wasn't showing middle and right blocks on homepage (the rest worked). Finally I figured out it was because of the new blocks management system which for some reason left those middle and right blocks unset on the homepage.

All in all, the site is usable and almost fully functional as the only glitches discovered so far seem to be with the autologin feature, some users administration stuff (which should affect just me) and that the "inbox" menu doesn't display with "inbox" text in "user menu" (on the left). I think that would be it and of course these remaining glitches will be resolved as soon as possible.

As for the benefits and new features, it looks like they're mostly related to the administration as the admin area has been revamped and looks completely different (and better) now. I especially noted the blocks administration which is a whole lot more flexible now. I will be able to set blocks not only to display on specific modules (sections to you), but every individual pages within the modules.

Before, I could have only set the block to display on all pages or on specific module. For example, if I set a block to be displayed in a newbb module it will show on *all* forums pages. Now, however, I can go further and select only specific individual pages on which to display the block. I will look into it some time later and see how can I take advantage of this new feature.. Some things that haven't been possible before may be possible now.

Anyway, there seem to be some other improvements as well, some even affecting users. I wont go much further about it here though until I get introduced to all changes myself. Then I'll post anything relevant here, just so you stay informed. :-)

Thanks
Daniel

Re: A major software upgrade: XOOPS 2.2, due today.

Hello again..

Some of the problems that appeared after the upgrade and may have caused some blank pages after login or logout should now be gone.

Some glitches have also been removed, namely that "inbox" menu item from "user menu", but possibly some other hidden issues cause by not having an updated template set (now I have updated it so it should be alright).

The remaining glitch is that autologin may still not work. We might have to wait for that one a bit (I'll be checking XOOPS.org frequently).

Now, some more about those new features. Here is the summary I took from the xoops.org board post listing the new major features in XOOPS 2.2:

Implementation of dynamic user profiles
Enhancements to the Private Message system
LDAP/CAS Authentication
Theme-ability and a completely new look for the administration area
Installation process re-developed to allow for module installation during XOOPS install

OK, so most of this doesn't tell you much, so here goes..

The dynamic user profiles basically means that now, by default, you have a few more options to tweak in your profile, but more importantly the possibility to extend those profile to whatever we wish. For example, remember that some of you requested an option to set the Jabber ID in your profile. Well, guess what, I have just added that field and now you can put your Jabber ID in your profile which will also be displayed on your profile view page to all members. I can add whatever I wish so suggestions are welcome.

Related to the profiles is the new distinction between your login username and "display name". This means that now you can set a different name to display in public, to the community, while having an existing one as your login name. This was added because of improved security because now nobody except you (and well, webmasters and moderators maybe) has to know your login name. So, if a cracker wants to crack your accound now it will have a double hard time succeeding as he'll have to guess both password and login name instead of just password.

New members can set this at the registration and existing members can set this in their profile ("Edit Account" from user menu). Currently, all existing members are set to have their display name same as login name to prevent any confusion. You can change it at will. Keep in mind one thing though: if you're gonna change your display name let it be something recognizeable so that we don't all of a sudden wonder who you are once you change it. Also, don't change your display name often, decide on one and stick with it, for the purpose of community recognizeability.

As for the enhancements in the private messaging system, just take a look at it. Now you have quite some additional features in it that may be useful, including savebox and outbox..

The LDAP authentication is also new, but it seems that the server we're on doesn't support it right now so we'll just keep using the normal XOOPS method. It's not anything you'd notice anyway.

In a previous post I already mentioned improvements in block administration. I am yet to see how will I take advantage of that. We can do whatever we want with placement of these blocks now so feel free to suggest if you'd like to see certain blocks moved or added or removed to or from certain specific places on site.

As for the new look of the admin area, this may mostly be of interest to moderators which have some admin access to a few of the modules inside the admin area. So, my fellow mods, feel free to take a look inside. It looks fresh and cool now. :-)

So there.. I believe everything on site works fine now (except that autologin). Since a good deal is new I will be checking things out, fixing if I find any further glitches and making improvements where I think they might be good to do. I will probably also update some of the modules as well.

If you notice any issues, bugs and usability problems, please feel free to post them along with the description of where (url) does it happen and what you do when it happens, so I can take a look at it. It might be that some old modules start coughing up with the new system in place..

That'll be it. Have a very libervis day. ;-)

Thanks
Daniel

Whoa. Sweet. I think it was worth it, even if we loose the 'remember me' function (which has refused to work again for me). The pages I mentioned over IRC that wouldn't work for me are once again, with more features. Cheers.

Thank you for going through the trouble.

"Remember me" feature will work and hopefully will soon as I posted a question on XOOPS.org. There must be a way to do it without waiting for this guy who usually makes those hacks to do it, because he is away for too long already..

Erm.. that means it works? :-D (a bit confusing sentence for me, sorry)

Thanks

Sorry, the grammar was a bit obscene. I meant to say, the pages like that "notification.php" are once again working. The extra features are handy too. Oh, and the "autologin" still isn't working as it should.

Cheers.

Re: A major software upgrade: XOOPS 2.2, due today.

Hold on guys.. I've attempted to upgrade to the latest XOOPS forum software (besides yet another update of XOOPS core), but things didn't really work out so I reverted back to the older version..

However, there may be some problems still and I'll be working on them as soon as possible at sunday.

Libervis is pretty much in mess right now (or so it seems), but I hope to bring it back up in order soon and in a better state.

Thank you
Daniel

There are some new nice things, like the drop down menu to see the contact info. :-)

Re: A major software upgrade: XOOPS 2.2, due today.

Yeah, there are also some other nice new features. Here is a quote from the CBB 2.2 Final Release news on xoops.org

Quote:

Changelog:
1 block/profile/css/adminmenu/encoding related content upgraded to XOOPS 2.2
2 XOOPS editor framework implemented
3 permission management separated from forum/category and default permission set and management added
4 category/forum creation on module installation
5 send PM with quoted post content
6 embedded upgrade: any version of newbb/cbb could be updated to up-to-date CBB by updating module
7 forum queries in xoops_version.php moved to save db query
8 change relative path to full path for some images
9 change forum list in jumpbox and topicmanager to a more clear style
10 moderator management merged into forum admin form with xoopsuserselect form

Alright, that probably doesn't say much to you. From what I've noticed, now it is easy to login if you're a member of the site when you want to post on forums even if autologin feature is offline and without the need to go to the login block. There is a login part right above the quick reply box. :-)

Anyway, I must say this isn't the end of upgrades and work on the system on libervis. There are certainly some 2.2 incompatibilities left in some modules so it is likely quite some modules will be upgraded at the time that follows.

If I don't manage to resolve certain more or less vital glitches the "classic" way and since there are some discrepancies lasting for a long time already I *maybe* even redo (re-install) the whole site. That would be done backing up the whole database and content and then either closing the site for a short time and deleting and then fresh-installing it all back up or fresh-installing in another directory while this original installation stays running.

Anyway, I'm not yet sure if I'll do that and if that'll be neccessery, but the site is certainly being technically worked on these days more than usual. I hope to get everything shining soon, but I can't promise anything for sure as I am being considerably slowed down by the fact I am not working on my own computer (disk died).

After I am back on my computer and the site is back in its 100% state I am going to resume with our "mission" (projects, new design, libervis network stuff). I can't wait. :-)

So there, you've been briefed.

Cheers everyone
Daniel

Well by the time you come back, things should be back in order on my end too (just a lot of school things demanding my attention).

Oh, btw would 'wombat' need a Drupal update sometime - and would it be hard to do?

Thanks for the update. Shocked)

Pascal

Well, there are new versions of Drupal and I haven't updated Nuxified either, but intend to. It shouldn't be hard. I think it's just uploading new files over old ones. You can look at the announcements at drupal.org

I can help later if you wish.

Anyway, that's a bit offtopic here. :-)
