What is the best way to grow this project? How can one affordably market and compete even on the lowest level?

Would there be any interest in "Team Mozdex" or something akin to other projects? Something like providing a few dedicated people stuff they need to spread the word?

Is the market for buttons/banners/links still valid in todays pay for link/pay for play world?

What ideas/tips/techniques would you offer to help us get off the ground fully?

all input appreciated!

I think it is possible that mozdex could benefit from taking Mozilla Firefox as a role model for at least some of the promotion ideas. Firefox really shined (and still does) when it comes to spreading the buzz.

If mozdex gets really good and a certain active community forms around it, then yes, most likely. I am not sure about the whole situation when it comes to the mozdex community and how much of it did it attract, but from what I know, mozdex does need more.
This is where writing about it helps, from press releases to maybe a few articles explaining why does the need for an open search engine exist, what are its benefits etc. These articles should then be published through major, high profile Free Software/Open Source and GNU/Linux related sites, but also maybe even through some of other search engine related sites. Their purpose would be to spark interest and call for greater community participation on which everything else can then be based.

I would say yes. We should make alot of nice banners and buttons and put them somewhere on mozdex.com so that people can choose from them and use them to link to mozdex.com. That way, everyone who thinks mozdex is a good idea will be able to link to it with no hassle and maybe even make their site look slightly nicer because of that button or banner, which of course presumes that this button or banner should be cool and attractive looking.

Well, for a start we need a greater community participation. Making those buttons and banners and putting them for choice on a "link to us" page would be an easy and good thing to do.

Re: How to market Mozdex?

Try to find other open source services. For example if someone has a dictionary server, you can both change your pages to also optionally do a websearch from the dictionary, and a dictionary search from the websearch.

Somewhat more difficult: something that I would really like to have is combined webmail / search such that you can click on a word in an email to search for it (perhaps only uncommon words). If someone else runs a webmail server, you could work together on this...
I'm really surprised gmail doesn't have this feature, by the way.

some good tips! we can extend the search to include several other sites, we we may create a page that would consolidate these.

Any good/friendly email providers that you know of that would like to integrate search?

Sorry, I don't know any open source email providers... otherwise I wouldn't have a gmail account Laughing .

...

I did a quick search and found webmail.us and postman.net .

I have a feature request: a cluster button on the results page if you chose not to cluster your results.
