Hi everyone, I suggest you stop buying sony products. Not just CDs, but everything with a "sony" label on it. Here's why:

I stopped buying sony over 5 years ago.

I'll even buy an Xbox 360 over a PS3 for me and my kids because of how bad Sony is as a company (and how much worse they are over even microsoft)

Yeah, I've read that.. there's a vivid example and a real life proof of how bad really the whole DRM idea is. Yeah yeah, DRM defenders could say this is an extreme case, but I say it's a case of "give me little give me all" where if we allow corporations such as sony and MS (Vista is gonna be drmed) to control what can or can't we do on our computers in any way, they are sure gonna expand on that "right" and then I wouldn't trust that there would be no more companies installing rootkits to my computer..

So, yes, I agree we should boycott sony. Luckily, we don't have much of sony stuff around in our household anyway. Smiling

I usually don't purchase CDs. I find them a rip off. Only time I ever really purchase stuff is when small, new bands who do a gig somewhere close by sell some of their stuff at the event. I find it a disgrace that music industry and other various companies are twisting todays laws just to make more revenue; like they haven't got enough.

DRM cases like this could only make people buy less. They are doing themselves a disfavour. I just wonder who will they blame for that.. p2p? Of course..

Like most attempts at controlling the consumer in the name of protection, they end up decreasing sales, which is ironically the very thing they fear. How very typical.

well this "Sony" isn't the same one as that Japanese company... This "Sony" is a music company, see http://www.sonymusic.com

Yes, sony music is just a Sony division which would mean it responds to Sony. So I'm not sure if Sony Music division can be corrupt in such a way while The Sony (like government) isn't...

And them founding the Open Invention Network (for acquiring GNU/Linux patents) doesn't mean much. They do it out of their interest, not out of ethics..

Thanks
Daniel

The part of sony that makes music players is very tight on the leash of sony music. IIRC that's why we have cdroms and mp3 now instead of minidisc and atrac.

Re: It's boycott time!

Well, here are some news.. Sony seems to be trying its best to redeem itself in this situation and Sony recalls risky 'rootkit' CDs, that is, it offers to exchange purchased CD's with new ones, hopefully DRM-free ones..

It has also re-released it's rootkit uninstaller which now according to the article appears to be safe.

But lawsuits (California, NewYork, Italy..) are still on the way (and should be). I just hope all of this teaches Sony a lesson, if a corporation like this can learn a lesson without trying to corcumvent these consequences without abandoning their corrupt ways, that is DRM in this case.
