read my blog entry first:
http://www.libervis.com/modules/weblog/details.php?blog_id=74

So, let's start throwing ideas. I have two:

picture of a stack of cash, picture of a brain
"is this you? or is THIS you?"

The other idea is an animation in which all kinds of words and phrases with "free" or "culture" in them flash by, eg "freedom", "underground culture", "freedom to share"... Then finally for two seconds "free culture". It could be a common ending for multiple "freemercials".

Now, what are your ideas?

For animations, forget flash and use a package called "GAP" which is a sort of massive plug-in animation kit for The GIMP. :-)

Just had to mention.

I said "flash by", meaning moving or appearing and disappearing quickly. I didn't even realize "flash" is also some proprietary software thingy...

Hey, no problem - I tend to block it too whilst surfing. :-D
Check out GAP. Gimp.org has a tutorial page on it, and also check what jimmac has done with weilding GAP:

Re: promotion brainstorming session

Nice idea Taco. I agree about not using flash, especially if there is a good alternative such may be this GAP. Those animations by Jimmac certainly look flashy enough to me to be a good alternative to "flash". And they are just gifs which are now fortunately patent free as far as I know.

As soon as I get back up and running in full (buy a new disk and setup a new GNU/Linux system) I'll be trying out GAP. I'd really like to make some cool animations for promoting Free Culture..

And here is one my idea, or more like a suggestion. The freemercial for Free Culture should in some way present Free Culture as something very opposite of boring and dull (as many people may see it now). It should show just how much its world can be exciting, cool and even trendy if they just give it a chance.

Going by the "trend" isn't always a good thing, that's true. But when the "trend" at hand is about the style and design that appeals to masses today I think going by it would be a good thing for the Free Culture and its spread. To see what kind of design I mean look at the TV stations such may be MTV for example. It seems that flashy circles and squares with round edges and SVG-like animations/images are "in" today. It's kind of an 80s retro style that is coming back in full colors today. And I think people are responding well to it because it looks nice and flashy at the same time being clean looking.

I might be just talking about the good design in general and not anything specific here, but the point is that if we want to spread out the awareness of the Free Culture to the masses, we need to appeal to those masses, and the best way to do it is to mimic the styles and design-trends that appeal to them now. That doesn't mean copying, but simply creating something in that sort of style, if you know what I mean.

One very good example of a mass-appealing design is the RedHat Site

When I have any specific ideas for a specific freemercial I'll post them here. We as a community can make more of them differently, but maybe we can all agree to have at least only one logo of the Free Culture to be used in all these animations/images and such. It can be a simple reversed copyright sign, or you can think of something else and see if majority likes it better. :-)

Thanks
Daniel

Something that also seems to be "in" is patterns of plants and flowers. Which is nice because I really like those :-) .

Hmmm... "sharing comes naturally"? Or is that too much hippieness?

Well to promote free software, we could perhaps use:
"Viagra for your desktop"
"Freecell/Mine Sweeper like you've never seen it before"

And yes, those were jokes. Smiling

Oh, and "sharing comes naturally" is alright. :-)

"viagra for your desktop" and "sharing comes naturally" seem to contradict each other.

Oh my, I really have to get my mind out of the gutter. :goof:

No please don't mention via***. I have enough refferal bot attacks on this site already. I don't need via*** sites now too.. :-P It's just a bad keyword.

As for animations and great ideas here. Now that I'm on ease with the site I'll try to install and try that GAP thingie for GIMP. I'll post my work here if I manage to create something.

Visitors, yes you, are there anyone among you who knows a bit about animation and would like to share your experience on this with us? :-)

Thanks
Daniel
