Re: Ubuntu add on cd (unofficial)

Canonical company surely goes places with the Ubuntu. They are even shipping free Ubuntu CD's in order to spread it, and Ubuntu popularity has spread enormously over the past months.

With that track record it is not to wonder that the company will go further with things such as this add-on-cd.

Many other distros just pack bunch of CD's per release and that's it. Ubuntu is on one CD and now provides an add-on option. I'd say, good going.

Btw: No i am not an Ubuntu user, but i can see how valuable this distro can be to GNU/Linux newbies and medium users, although it is interesting to many advanced users as well.

Oh and yeah, i'm still waiting for my 10 Ubuntu CD's. :-D

Re: Ubuntu add on cd (unofficial)

I have the latest version of Ubuntu installed as well, but I found it doesn't include enough apps. My Suse 9.3 Pro came with an entire dvd's worth of nice programs and applications. Nice to have a large choice, and much variety... :-)

If the area around my avatar is dark gray chances are you are using MS Internet Explorer, one of the few browsers that do not have full PNG-24 support. Considered trying [url=http://bro

Re: Ubuntu add on cd (unofficial)

well I uninstalled ubuntu (well the only way to do this may be reformating the HD Smiling ) and changed back to Debian right after 3 days installing it... (however I do want to thank for their CDs as I can give them to who is curious about GNU/Linux)

Add-on CD would be a CD with additional software not found on the normal Ubuntu CD release. It's basically just a CD with a bunch of more software meant to be installed in addition to what one installed from the original Ubuntu CD.

Re: Ubuntu add on cd (unofficial)

Actually with some distros, especially copies of them that your order, in nice packaging, with the manual and everything (something we do in our household because thus we are supporting Linux), all of the add-on software comes with it! My version of Suse 9.3 Pro came on a DVD, completely filled, to the last 10 kilobytes.

And if I want more, APT is always nice, plus the new version of Ubuntu comes with APT pre-installed! So you just enter your command line, and type:-

apt install application

Very nice, and splendid way to get new apps as well as update old ones. Since Ubuntu is Debian based, and most Debian based distros now come with APT pre-installed, you can enjoy this feature, right after install. With the rest of us, you can also install APT, like I did on my Suse; not hard, 2 RPMs and compile them or install them with something like YaST, and you're ready to use it in the cli. Smiling

And might I add, my dad just got Synaptic, the package manager working under Suse. Bit of fiddling, but it works!

W00t! :-D
