We have an interview to do [COMPLETED]

One of the more important and significant plans for 2006 was to do more interviews of popular and/or important people in Free Culture.

Well, we have one such person as member of Libervis.com already so I took the chance and contacted him if he is interesting in an interview. I've got a positive response and we are to compile a list of questions to be asked.
It is Byron Miller from Mozdex.com, an open search engine. He is an "open source advocate" and as he says is fighting for congress. His political site is at http://www.byronmiller.org/ although it is offline at the moment.

Our 2006 interviews are meant to be cooperative which is why I've already asked for some questions-to-ask suggestions on IRC. Dylunio, a member, responded and said he'll read up on mozdex and let me know if he thinks of any good questions.

I invite you as moderators (EDIT: and all members) to suggest some yourself and I'll take all into consideration when putting a list of questions together.

I could make a public thread about this, but since Byron M. is a member and coming here every once in a while it could be a bit ackward so maybe we should just "contain" the cooperation for this interview to whoever comes on IRC and you moderators. Let me know what you think.

EDIT: Actually, we are opening it up afterall. Taco (in reply) made a good point for it.

Main objectives of this interview would be to find out more about Byron Miller, his involvement in mozdex.com as well as Free Software and Free Culture (including his political activities). The interview is a chance to promote the Mozdex.com search engine and by the mere fact that it is published on Libervis.com it would also promote this site as well which is a plus for both sides.

Also, those who make most contribution to making this interview (as in questions) should of course be mentioned in a credits note or something. The "interviewer" (one seen asking a question in the final article) would however simply be marked as "Libervis" or "Libervis.com".

Thank you
Daniel

I would also add an opening question that would be put at the very beginning of an interview asking:

"Could you tell us something about yourself?"

Because news sites tend to copy the first paragraph, it should be written like this (in third person):

Byron Miller is ... etc etc ... mozdex ... etc etc ... congress ... etc etc ...

You get the idea.

Re: We have an interview to do

Yes, I get the good idea. :-)

That would then be better than putting it in form of a question and an answer. Actually, we can have that question asked and answered, but the just rephrazed into an introduction with few quotes.

Of course, since this is open Byron, feel free to make your own suggestions as well as approve the ideas for publishing we've put so far. Any of your input is welcome, it's your interview afterall. :-)

Thanks

Re: We have an interview to do

Another question!

What kind of things do you imagine will others build on top of mozdex? What does mozdex provide to make this possible?
(I'm hinting at that search rss thing)

Daniel: before you push it to the news sites, give me a chance to edit, after that we need Byron's approval of the text, and then it can go to the press Smiling

Sure, I'll put it in a wiki then or just give you the permission to edit the article (if you don't already have it). No need to rush it. :-)

Thanks

Re: We have an interview to do

AFAIK I can edit anything in any forum, but in this case I would simply make a copy.

Maybe interviews shouldn't be put in the wiki. In contrast with a collaborative article, it should be completely clear what was written by the interviewed person, and what was written by others.

Oh, and maybe we should a note to the end of the interview, something like this: "It's too late to get your question to Byron Miller into this interview, but if you join libervis, you can participate in our next interviews."

I'm open as to the publication of the iterview. i'll see if i can't find some examples of what others have done to give you ideas.

Other then that i have some obvious spelling/grammatical errors i need to cleanup but i really just wanted to get things out as they were thought out to be as honest as i could. Please pardon the obvious grammar issues Smiling

Re: We have an interview to do

I'm on it. The draft should be ready for moderators review tomorrow and the optimal publishing date should be monday. Weekends are slow anyway and I think less people read the news on weekends compared to the normal week days.

Thanks
Daniel

Re: We have an interview to do

We just did the final draft and sent it to you Byron for approval. If anyone wants to take a look at it before release you can get the Open Document (!) Text file from http://www.libervis.com/docs/Libervis_Interview_With_Byron_Miller.odt

It should be published tomorrow (monday) as soon as I get the approval from Byron.

One thing crossed my mind. I can't be sure of anything, but once we submit this to major Free Software related media (like LXer and LinuxToday and even Digg.com) there is a remote possibility in my opinion that this gets slashdotted which wont fair well for this server.).

Maybe we should mirror it somewhere, just in case?

Thanks
Daniel
