Re: We have an interview to do

Gotta add the CC or GFDL notice.

Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike is the default license in articles section where it'll be published. I think that one would be alright..

What do you think?

Re: We have an interview to do

I would think so. Perhaps we should make GFDL the default instead of cc-att-sa, because IIRC it has less problems. But nothing special about the license here...

I don't know if it will get slashdotted. If you think it will, maybe we should use the coral content distribution network: http://www.coralcdn.org/ .
It's really easy: enter the url at that page, and they will host a copy.

edit: they won't host a copy of the images though, so to prevent slashdotters from taking down libervis.com, we should put the article on a special page without any images (such as the libervis logo)

Re: We have an interview to do

I am taking a closer look at GFDL again. What about the right to modify though? If people can modify the interview then they can change it to appear as if Byron said something that he didn't. Maybe this is a case for some kind of noderivs type of license although then some other non-harmful types of derivating would be banned..

Anyway, the coralcdn site looks like a good solution. We can make three versions of the interview available; the normal one in articles section, the one without images (just plain html text) and the open document text one. Then we can put a note in the normal version that if someone is to link it from a high traffic site like slashdot to put a link to the coraldns one that would mirror the stripped version.

I agree with the above comment, Creative Commons may make more sense Smiling

as far as distribution goes, shortly we will have a network of squid proxy/caching servers on the east and west coast, perhaps we could offer you image hosting/caching services in the future as your site grows. Not up right now but something we may open up in the future.

Thinking of hosting images... A portrait of Byron might be nice Smiling .

Oh, and interviews should be NoDerivs indeed. I think quotes (which should be allowed) are allowed trough fair use?

Re: We have an interview to do

Hey Byron. Right now Libervis doesn't have any bandwidth problems (actually hosting is more problematic because we're near 250 MB heavy and that space is running up). For any "accidental" slashdotting of potentially slashdot-friendly content something like coralcdn should do.

Btw, have you recieved my PM Byron, and reviewed the interview? Do we have an OK from you to publish this?

I think quotes should always be allowed through fair use no matter what license we choose.

Well, if Byron agrees we can put it under CC Attribution-NoDerivs. That one would basically allow free distribution in any way as long as original authors (we and Byron) are attributed and the content is unchanged. Still, I'm not sure about that. Alot of things can be considered as derivation that we may not be anticipating right now. Also, we've already published a good deal of opinion pieces under CC-by-sa.

Thanks
Daniel

Re: We have an interview to do

Yea, but allowing an interview to be modified is bad... In case of a normal opinion piece, modification is no problem because it's clear it might not present the original opinions anymore. Interviews are different because one would expect that the parts written by the interviewed person really are written by that person. In a derivative interview you would ask a few more questions and add those, not modify the original answers.

Perhaps we need a special interview license...

Re: We have an interview to do

Ok.. noderivs it should be then. If Byron agrees we just put a license note below the article that overrides the default one specified.

Eh, maybe we do, but we need at least one legal expert to do something like that. A proposition to CC can be made though if we discuss and find it really neccessery. :-)
