The biggest thing is that this is going against the will of the EU parliament. Strangely it's actually somewhat comforting to know that America isn't the only screwed up pseudo-democratic institution, but only in the sense that at least I can feel like I'm not alone in my dispair.

Damn! I don't believe this, I really thought that this would not happen :shake: .

I just hope that what's left of my faith in The_Reason and Good_Will will somehow survive this.

The ones who are left having the reason and good will are the ones who have the right to demand it. Let them come, let them pass those dreadful laws, but i will never accept them... if they are forcing us to do it, we will do it. Disobedience is what is always left for us in such situations. Do you really thing FS people and linux users developers will tolerate this. I've said it before and i will say it now. Free software movement and development model will never fall and as much as they (the lawmakers, capitalists, whoever) pressure us, the greater the scale of our revolution will be.

Thank you
Daniel

Off course this will not be tolerated, not by FS people and not by many computer-related people who have nothing to do with FOSS but see the danger in adopting software patents. I think that at this point FS movement should try to gather all of them and make some real noise on this issue. This is everything we can do at this point. And when the laws are passed disobedience is indeed what is left.

I can see some heavy patenting in Europe in the years in front of us, and hope that it will be somehow stopped before we reach the "point of no return" where USA is right now. Software patents are totally and utterly wrong, and I just don't believe that they will be adopted by EU. And being a software developer is one of my options and I am ready to do anything to stop this patent monster from biting me in the leg all the time.

What is the most radical and most progressive thing we on libervis can do to aid the fight against software patents, besides already running anti-patent banners and anti-patent pagea and links etc..? Does anyone has a brilliant idea? Idea

Thanks
Daniel

Let's patent the EU, then sue them for using our idea Laughing .

hmmm. Writing a patent for "international european political body" and submitting it to the patent office AND to the press could be an interesting way of making a point...

That would be indeed very radical. Although i never submitted a patent so i'm not sure about the whole procedure.. Maybe someone knows more? :-)

Thx
Dan

This is a great idea, it could even bring some more publicity to the issue. And publicity is good for us because we are on the right side here :-) .

I was thinking that it would be great if those EU countries that oppose software patents would make something (more or less) radical just to point out the strength of their decision. This could shake up EU a bit. I hope that something like this will kick-in in the last moment and kick-out this patent-monster trying to get inside EU.

I don't know much about the procedure of getting a patent, but this seems pretty unpatentable to me (but USA anyway teaches us that you can patent anything). However, trying to do so would certainly raise some dust and make a good point.

It occured to me that FSF could try to race for patents together with the others and gather enough patents to cross-patent with everyone, but I soon gave up on the idea because it is so wrong and totally upside-down. Anyone seeing an option of last resort here?

Sure, there is an option. Refuse to buy software from companies that try to get software patents. If we can get a substantial part of customers to buy only patent-free software, no company will be so stupid to try to patent something!

Probably something like this would work where people are more conscious about this. However many people have the mentality (mainly in third world countires) for not paying (they "don't need it", or they think they don't) the licenses and generally buy unauthorized copies from the proprietary software. Even many companies do that. They claim that licenses are too expensive, so they refuse to pay for a license, but don't refuse to use proprietary software. Others that would pay for a license would say they won't change because they "already know" how to use them and "don't have time to learn something else". I am against this simplistic line of thought, but there is still plenty of people which does not care about patents, they only want to use their unauthorized copies and do their work.

Thank you,
AndrMarcanth
