What do you love about open source/free software movement the most? What is exactly that got you into using it and maybe even supporting it in some way?

For me it's the classic idea of software being available completely free. I was stunned with happiness when i found out that i can use my mandrake linux from that old CD without any registrations and fee's to make it legal.
I became an enthusiast about it because of the noble ideals that stand behind, ideals of true freedom and colaboration, the fact that everyone, even myself can be a great part of it. That is why i am developing this site also.

Your 'testimonies'?

Thank you.

I think what got me in the open source usage is the fact that it was accessible to me when I was at school. That was the place were I was the more open to learn and use different peace of software and all commercial software were unavailable to me.

I like the idea that many company are doing now about making it available for students or GPL for no-commercial project and close for commercial entity. It's great to be able to do stuff freely without having to build a business around every project.

That's what give me the interest in giving away my personnal works and contribute to some projects.

Even more great is the fact the the very 'free software' AKA open source software can be at the same time commercial. There is a difference between the word "commercial" and the word "proprietary". Free software can be commercial, but only if it provides these four basic freedoms, the freedom to use, copy, redistribute and modify.
How can free software be commercial? By distributing it for a price.
For example, red hat linux is commercial when red hat company sells it on CD's therefore charging for the way of distributing it. I also believe that you can even charge for download of the open source software. What you can't do is restrict the buyer from further redistributing, copying, modifying or even resseling it.

It's a good way for open source programmers to earn money. And no matter if the users redistribute the program that the programmer sells, he/she can always have a constant stream of profit by always charging for the newest version that are released periodically. That way, programmer doesn't charges for the software itself, but by providing it's distributin. It's a tricky and beutiful thing. It makes open source/free software not only a freedom movement, but a business model to, the right, ethical, business model.
That's one of the things i love the most about it. :-)

something I noticed:
with closed source software I often wish I had the source so I could fix something. with open source software I never needed to fix anything.
