I wanted to brief you on what was happening at this site lately and the state in which it is and is going to be in the next few days (hopefully that short).

As you may or may not noticed Libervis.com was temporarily closed or disfunctional for about 12 hours at best. The reason was reinstalling the whole web system that makes this site work from scratch as an attempt to resolve some of the painful issues that it had, not being able to finalise new user registrations being one of these issues.

The reinstallation is done and the database has been 98% or so recovered. Let's give those 2% to some currently missing profile information for most of users and stuff that has been deliberately left out to be replaced with better data (mostly unimportant and not part of the sites "meat"; content).

What I've been able to achieve by this reinstallation is make the "receng blog entries" block work again. It was missing for a few days before because it threw out 500 Internal Server Error message for some reason when displayed on the homepage (or anywhere). Also, I've used the chance to switch to a new module for our articles section and port all articles to it. This is now done and the new section looks great (if you ask me). Later after some polishing of the setting it may look even better. The new module is actually in beta, but is still much more stable then the one we used before (which was again giving blank pages after reinstall as it did once before). It was pretty buggy and only not touching its configuration has mostly left it running alright for the past months.

However, the major problem has most unfortunately not been resolved; new users still can't finalize their registrations to the site. This is apparently a bad bug and one not yet addressed by the XOOPS development team. I'm gonna keep looking for solutions as I wait for the fix by the XOOPS team.

So, to summarize, this is what works fine:

- Registered members can normally login and post
- Everyone can view all content without problems as well as submit
- Contact form works so you can easily contact me to report if anything else isn't working
- All RSS feeds on site should work (for forum-wide feed use the RSS link on the forums index)
- You can edif your profiles fine

Okay, that was just to name the things you should be safe (and encouraged) to use without trouble.

Here are the things currently known not to work:

- Anonymous users can't finalize registration and are instead "greeted" with a "can't register new user" message. They are however actually added to the database and I can see the username and email, but with the "-1" status (which is neither inactive or active user, something weirdly in between). This enables me to email all users once the registration issue has been fixed to come back and try again. I am also considering manually making these accounts and sending in passwords so that they can pass this and use the site without trouble, until the normal registration is fixed.

- Autologin still doesn't work. However, after reinstallation it might work. I still haven't reapplied it so that's something I'm gonna do.

- Some blocks (usually on the left) that were in some sections are now missing. This is actually not an issue, they just need to be configured to show back there. I'll do that soon.

- Some sections images are "wrong". For example, FUDZilla has a "web links" header image instead of Taco's "debuking fishy stories about FOSS" header. This is just a matter of replacing the image and will also be done soon.

Hm, that leaves us with only one critical and one non critical problems as the last two are pretty much "esthetics".

If you encounter any other issues, this is the place where you can post it. I'll temporarily enable anonymous replies in this forum so anonymous can report problems as well.

So there, I just wanted not to keep you in dark and let you know that I am aware of the problems and that I'm working on it. I will also admit that I am partially responsible for them as I shouldn't have rushed with upgrading the system so early. My only defence is that XOOPS.org guys released it as stable (later relabeled to RC) and that was enough to decieve me. I am sorry now, believe me.

Wish me luck with taking the site back to full shape. :smurf:

Thank you
Your host, Danijel Orsolic

Re: Your webmaster report to you

Guess what guys! Your stupid webmaster (me) just got lucky :-D

Registrations now work fine, all is fine. Before now I somehow missed the last entries of the xoops_user_profile table in our database which were the remaining cause of this problem. They had the number of posts set to "-1" (which is an anomaly) and they just had to be deleted after other presequent steps were completed/fixed (something about custom fields where the bug is, I wont go into details).

So, I am now off to try and apply the autologin feature. I am so happy. All people are now welcome, you can finally register. :-)

Thanks
Daniel

Re: Your webmaster report to you

Yet another update!

Autologin hack has been applied and seems to be working so far. I've been logged in for a few hours now without the need to relogin at all. Let me know if it works for you as well.

I've also added a new site map module which replaces the old and not updated sitemap page. For a site as dynamic as this one, it is only appropriate for the module to be dynamic as well. This one automatically sorts everything out into a nice readable map people can use in case they don't know where's what or want to see an overview of what this site features.

That's not all. Right this moment I'm uploading a fix for the not being able to move topics bug so you can expect me to move topics that were posted in wrong places. And I've put back and recovered the links section as well.

So, not only that we're getting things fixed around here, the site is getting even better, technically. I feel like refitting a starship before it warps out again (get back to our old agenda, Libervis Network). :-)

Cheers everyone
Daniel

I really can't resist...

Kirk: Do you always multiply your repair estimates by a factor of four?
Scotty: How else to maintain my reputation as a miracle worker?
Kirk: Your reputation is safe with me.

Hehe, I am really glad you posted that Taco. :-)

I remember that dialog, only I'm not sure if I saw it in original series (which I didn't actually watched much) or in newer like DS9 maybe. Chief O'Reilly comes to mind. :-D

Anyway, I can confirm that the internal sens.. I mean autologin feature works now. I've just come after almost a day and I'm logged in automatically. :-)

Thanks
Daniel

Re: Your webmaster report to you

Alrighty, more good news.. I've set some blocks back on some sections (blogs, articles, wiki and such) as well as license statements and the message on articles index and submit pages.

You may have also noticed the misc menu above. It now replaces that ugly horizontal block that was on homepage and that you registered members were seeing at the top of the center column. This looks much nicer I think.

Another thing, some fields in some of your profiles are empty so I invite you to fill them in as soon as you login next time. You Taco are alright, I've recovered your's and also of some others and Pascal already reedited his profile. Everyone else please do the same.

Libervis.com is pretty much "refit" now..

*Me sits in the captains chair and says:* Take us to warp.. unlimited!

I'd say the background color of that misc menu is slightly off...

I just changed it to be the same as the left/right column backgrounds. But you can always propose a different color, just post the hexadecimal. :-) The current one is #f6f7f8.

Btw, I'm gonna look into those forums not showing who's their moderator... should be fixed quickly.

Thanks
Daniel

OK, that's done. All forums have me designated as a moderator with Advocacy and Activism, Free Operating Systems and New Technology also having Taco (tbuitenh), Creative Content with Pascal and General Philosophy with Monserrat designated.

If I made a mistake please correct me either of you..

JamesThompson wasn't selected because he's been completely inactive for months now. He will be demoted from the position. It's only logical to do that. Also, sdousley wasn't selected either and am also considering to demote him due to inactivity.

As for Monserrat, he's been there some time ago and have contributed much more. He deserves alot more time. But I don't have to say that the top moderator on libervis, almost my right hand, was Taco Buitenhuis (tbuitenh) which is (logically enough) the top poster in our "top posters" block which pretty much shows the correct state. According to it, and as it actually is, Pascal is second best and then Monserrat, Stojic and the rest.

But let's hope only those few of us don't be the only one keeping this place alive.

Btw, those PM messages that were missing are back.

And please, if you encounter *ANY* problems, bugs or whatever, let me know either here or in "Questions & Suggestions" forum and I'll see what I can do.

Thank you
Daniel

Re: Your webmaster report to you

I've disabled automatic welcoming new users feature which was new with this new version of forum software we use. The reason is that it obviously reveals email addresses of users to even anonymous users (as part of that automatic post) which may cause them to be spammed, something I surely don't want to cause.

Until I see how can I somehow prevent it to automatically print in the email address, it will stay disabled. New users are encouraged to introduce themselves naturally by opening a thread about themselves.

Revealed email addresses have been removed from sight in order to prevent further vulnerable exposure.

Thank you
Daniel
